Activate your iphone without AT&T Service:
Over the last few days, some intrepid geeks have been working on cracking the iPhone activation service and it works:
Here is how:
1.) Download the following file to your Mac. iPhoneTool.zip
2.) Extract it to a directory on your desktop named iPhoneTool
3.) Open the program “Terminal” location in HardDrive/Applications/Utilities
4.) Type the following command into the flashing cursor:
cd ~/Desktop/iPhoneTool
5.) Now make sure your iPhone is connected and you quit iTunes
6.) To activate your iPhone type the follwoing command into the flashing cursor (note that there are two dashes before activate):
./tool –activate a.plist
7.) Your iPhone screen should say something about a SIM error which is fine. Just slide the unlock bar over and it should work. Now connect it to your computer and you should be able to configure it through iTunes.

I tried doing as you told but step 7 was not the result for me. After step 6, I was left with: options:
–help Shows this information
–state Prints the current phone activation state
–deactivate Deactivates the phone
–activate Activates the phone using specified plist
Please help me!!!

luke, you can try: cd ~/Desktop/iPhoneTool
This assumes that you extracted the zip file onto the Desktop, if you extraced it elsewhere you will have to “cd” to that directory

what you need to do in step six is type this in terminal:
“./tool –-activate a.plist”
note that there are two dashes before activate. My original post only showd one. That was a typo on my part. Ill revise it right now

Just a stupid question….(my iPhone is not here yet)…but suppose I decide later to use AT&T.
Is there a way to deactivate it to be able to activate using AT&T after using your method?

Hmmm….reading your code I see that there is a deactivation function…can I assume it returns the iPhone to its original state?

Help please, i unziped the file on my desktop ( its a folder named iPhone Tool ) but i am getting a “No such file or directory” when i try to input “cd ~/Desktop/iPhoneTool” in TERMINAL.

The first 2 times I tried it it didn’t work … until I realized I hadn’t upgraded to iTunes 7.3 duh. DL’ed iT 7.3 , installed, run it, connected to store, quit and restarted and it activated the phone. YEHHH hooo.
Still have one problem left, it appears iTunes doesn’t know the phone is unlocked. It won’t sync. It keep taking me to their “Lets get started with AT&T page” Any clues???

Worked great - some small notes:
1. Step 1 unzips to “iPhone Tool” with a space, that should be removed for Step 4 “cd” command to work. (Or put a space in that.)
2. Step 6 typo still not corrected (with 2 dashes before “activate”)
3. When you launch iTunes it will still ask you to activate iPhone with AT&T. Click CANCEL and then it will ask “are you sure? … any progress made in activating… will be lost.” Click YES.

I had first tried the fake ssn with activation but subsequently found this method. The phone is unlocked however when connected via iTunes I get the message “your activation requires additional time to complete” Any suggestions???

Now, when you all say unbricked and activate your phone without AT&T, does that mean that you can use it with another telecommunications carrier? Cause I am from the Caribbean- Trinidad and Tobago to be exact. And if you guys have been able to pull this off, I will have an iPhone ordered right away and do this hack. However, there are reports that people have been unable to unbrick the phone but only be able to use it as a wifi enabled iPod. They are not able to place phone calls using the device.
Are you guys able to make calls using another service carrier? can you all make calls with another SIM, other than that of AT&T in the iPhone?
I’ll very much appreciate the feedback.

As to the question of not being able to sync your media files afer the activaton: This seems to work or not work depending on the sim card. The first thing I would try is removing the chip, reactivating it with the software and then connecting to iTunes.
As to the question about whether this will allow you to use the iPhone on another carrier, It will not. — Not yet. There are a lot of talented people working on this and it will happen soon - check out http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/ -those guys are the iPhone hacking gurus. They have been working non-stop and are close to that goal.

i am ziped it int the right folder…and i can see the folder ……\Desktop/iPhoneTool
but when i write :
tool –-activate a.plist is says ” Der Befehl “tool” ist entweder falsch geschrieben oder konnte nicht gefunden werden” it means the “tool” is writing wrong or could not found….
I use the programm “Eingabeaufforderung” comes with xp to be on “dos”…

I’ll be picking up an iPhone in about a week, but for now I was just wondering what I’ll be allowed to do with the phone once I complete your steps.
Obviously I know I’ll be able to use the iPod (music and videos) but what else? Some people are saying I’ll have internet but how is that possible? Don’t you usually have to pay for that sort of thing?
Also, will I have access to the regular features like the camera, photos, notes, calculator, etc.?
Oh, and one more question…if there’s internet access does that mean I’ll be able to get the maps, stock prices, YouTube, and mail?

The reason youtube won’t work is that the youtube wigget will first attempt to establish for a EDGE connection before connecting to WIFI. When you activate using those recent hacked method no EDGE or network settings will be downloaded into the phone, so the phone will get struck on that step.

But there are people who activated via ATT, and then canceled service, and they claimed that youtube worked fine with wifi. People even experimented using an iphone that is activated via ATT but with SIM card removed, youtube worked fine with wifi also. So I doubt that it has something to do with that it stuck trying using EDGE connection.

Commands run fine, iPhone unlocks, but when I try to sync I get the error message “iTunes could not sync calendars to the iPhone because the iPhone disconected.”
Am I doing something wrong?

Works perfectly. But I don’t think YouTube will work for some reason - maybe because I’m in Denmark and they are doing some kind of IP based blocking.
WiFi works great otherwise, Google Maps, mail, etc….flawless. Now if someone could just get rid of that iTunes nag screen asking me to activate my phone.

YouTube aren’t blocking IP, we have to iPhone here (same wifi network), one unlocked via AT&T and other unlocked with Jon’s method. YouTube works fine on the first and cannot connect on the second.
I tried without SIM to test if was the EDGE problem or not, but cannot connect again.
This week I will try Anderson method…

I can definitely state YouTube WORKS over WiFi with the AT&T activate & cancel method. I’m in Canada so its not a US-based IP blocking or anything like that. I went with the prepaid activation and cancel because it seems these other hacks don’t allow YouTube to work over WiFi. Also, I’ve not heard definitively if this hack will allow you to later activate with AT&T (although if/once SIM unlock has been achieved its probably a non-issue).

Hi, I just downloaded zip and extracted it and iPhonetool folder comes up on my desktop.
It has iPhone Tool folder in it but also __MACOSX folder which seems there’s no data inside.

First, i applied this unlock method, everything works fine but the phone and youtube. Then i restore my iphone and it’s reseted so i activate it by “Fake SSN method” to valid for Prepaid plan and it absolutely works, now i can use Youtube too…that’s cool. Conclusion: You can apply this hack and when you change your mind want to back to AT&T, just restore it and your phone is just like new for activate from AT&T.

Using my brother-in-law’s mac and I tried running ./tool –activate a.plist and got the following response:

Anthony, my is that you will need to install the latest (7.3) version of itunes ion your brothers mac before this will work. You should be able to do this within his copy of itunes by selecting update within the menus.

I’ve done everything that this guide says to do, and still I get nowhere. Following the instructions gets me this:

and

I was wondering if once the phone has been activated with this code, do you have to pay for the internet service? I’m confused by this because how can you get away with free internet? Nothing in this world is ever free, so I don’t know how this works? Or is it only localized? For example, can I only get it at say a Starbucks with WiFi?

Heyy, i have been searching for a new phone that will do what i want it to do, and the iPhone is about the greatest invention ever. when i first ran the iPhone Tool, i also got a directory not found message…when i looked at the extracted folder on the desktop, it immediately occurred to me that the folder was called “iPhone Tool” (with a space between the two words)…
the instructions read “cd ~/Desktop/iPhoneTool”…so after deleting the space in the directory name (it should now read “iPhoneTool”), it worked like a charm…maybe others are having the same issue…hope this helps at least one other person.
thank you for making this tool available…it made me smile to be able to use my iPhone within a minute of opening it (here in Germany)…now i am waiting for the SIM unlock like everyone else.

Thanks for the solution, know I can sync my music, photos, calender, email, etc, etc, to my iphon.
Also browse the web, see maps, etc, etc.
Remove the sim card if you have problems that the iphone try to connect to ATT.

The folder name has a space between iphone and tool like this: iphone tool
You need to change to that folder or rename to the folder iphonetool

Wow! Talk about a great hack. This works in seconds. I’m in Toronto, Canada and purchased an iPhone in NYC. Brought it home downloaded the iPhoneTool and KAPOW I now have an almost fully functioning Wi-Fi enabled six gen iPod. Anyone have an idea if there is a hack yet to make the YouTube viewer work on the iPhone. Also waiting for the SIM unlock which I understand is around the corner! Thanks Anderson.

it seems to have worked fine but i can’t get the wifi to engage (i think that’s the problem). i’ve got 3 bars connected to my home router and my macbook is working but when i try to get to a website or mail, i get “could not activate EDGE _click okay_ and get another window that says ’safari can not open the page because it can not find the server’. it doesn’t seem to see wifi. i tried turning the airplane mode on and off. it shows and ip and subnet but everything else in*

ok after a lengthy conversation with AT+T i have found out that my sim card is basically rubbish and stopping the iphone from activating and need to get hold of a new sim card
Now AT+T dont ship sim cards overseas and was wondering whether anyone from the US would be kind enough to get one for me if i was to transfer fund to paypal etc for purchase and shipping as i dont know anyone who lives out there.
Im going to ask around friends and family first to see if they know of anyone but would anyone be kind enough to do this for me if i cant find anyone feel free to email me ablettnikki@hotmail.com

Ya que he visto varias personas pidiendo esto en español decidi conectarme y ayudar a muchos!! Actualmente el iphone se ha desbloqueado parcialmente… quiero decir basicamente esta totalmente desbloqueado excepto el telefono… yo no les puedo decir todos los detalles ya q yo estoy esperando mi propio telefono… Pero desde luego les puedo decir lo q se!!
iPhoneTool.zip ( busquen arriba q hay un link para bajarlo)
2.) Extraiganlo a un directorio en su Escritorio que se llama: iPhoneTool
3.) Abran el programa “Terminal” locarlizado en HardDrive/Applications/Utilities
4.) Escriban este comando en el cursor q “flashea” o en buen espanol prende y apaga:
cd ~/Desktop/iPhoneTool
5.) Ahora asegurese q el iPhone esta connectado y que su ITunes esta cerrado
6.) Para activar el iPhone escriba el siguiente comando en el cursor q prende y apaga(note q hay 2 lineas antes de la palabra activate):
./tool –-activate a.plist
7.) Su pantalla del iphone dira algo como SIM ERROR, lo cual es NORMAL que diga eso. Simplemente mueva la barra de unlock sobre eso y debe de funcionar bien.Ahora Conectelo a su computadora y usted debe de seguir las intrucciones atravez de iTunes. Es Recomendable q tenga la iTunes version 7.3

y no me terminaba de dar el iPhone el mensaje de SIM ERROR que hace falta para que el telefono se nos active con este metodo.
Lo intente un montón de veces , asegurandome que ponia el doble guión… y nada.
Al final conecte un momento iTunes, y al ver el iPhone el iTunes, y luego repetir el proces, me funciono perfectamente.
Por cierto que me funciona todo menos, el telefono y el Youtube

I had the same problem in that my iphone did not recognize my WiFi. Go to the security seetings of your WAP/router and check the security settings. To start with remove any WEP or WPA encoding and use “unsecured WiFi”. Then your iPhone should be able to connect. When you get the chance to sort out how to connect it to a secured WiFi please let me know.

Just to be clear.
If I already have a New AT&T Sim card (same Blue one that’s in the iPhone) and have it running on my current AT&T Corp plan in my Nokia I should be able to replace the iPhone sim with my current sim and use the iPhone Tool to activate the phone? I also found detailed instructions on http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_using_cingular_sim.html which looks lengthly by clearly written. Are the 2 methods different? Whats the easist way to get me up and running (Im a Mac user 10.4.10) Lastly, I have a current dataand text plan that uses Edge, will I be able to use Safari on the phone via Edge? I have read several posts where people thought it would not work.

I was able to successfully get my ATT Corp account working on my phone. I used the steps in the 3dadd link I posted above. I managed to save a few steps by using the OSX iPhone Activation util.Everything works but Youtube and email. My guess is that both of these needs different type of Edge activation.Wifi works perfect for Internet ,Maps,Weather,and Stocks.All of these work with my standard Edge connection as well.Again, youtube and email won’t connect on either wifi or iPhone Edge.Email will keep trying.For some reason I can send email but not recieve.I have double checked settings.
Now for the wierd thing.I can sync with iTunes but it only shows my iphone has 300mb .The iPhone shows 7.3GB
I should also point out that am typing this on the iPhone vis my ATT Corp account Edge connection.

The hack worked for me! Youtube won’t work, but email does. I contact with wifi.

UPDATE: AT&T Corp Plan Sim works OK
After Restoring the iPhone with iTunes and following the steps again ( http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_using_cingular_sim.html ) the iPhone and iTunes now read 7.3 GB after the first Sync. My guess is that something can get mixed up in the putfile Service.plist which is the last step. I saw several people were having issue. (Make sure the file is actually in the phonedmg folder)
Youtube is now the only thing that does not work. POP3 email works on WiFI and my current (non iPhone) Edge Data plan.
Here’s one step to help save some time for other people trying to use their Corp Business Plan ATT accounts. Remove the Sim from the iPhone and put in your current mobile> Call AT&T Wireles 800-888-7600 and tell them you received a new Sim and need to update your phone. Give them the ICCID number from the iPhone Box (easier to read) and after 5 minutes your current cell phone will be paired with your iPhone Sim card. Test it by placing a call. Now remove the sim card and put it back in the iPhone and follow the instructions from the link above. Note, you will still get the SimmError if you just try and Activate using iPhoneAct or one of the other Utils. You still need to to do the Jailbreak step and other steps. The main reason for using your iPhone SIm in your old phone is have all the correct pieces in place when Apple comes out with an update. There might be a link with the iPhone Serial number, ICCID,IMEI that are on the back of the box.

Does someone know, how to use YouTube, with the crack???, because is not responding, it only shows “cannot connect to YouTube”. I think that YouTube, is connecting with EDGE instead of wifi.

I’ve been working on this for hours. I can’t even get past the “no directory” issue no matter if iphonetool is one or 2 words. I see a folder on my desktop that says “iPhone Tool”. In it are 4 files .plist and tool along with 2 others.
Can someone tell me what to do here? Did I set it up wrong?
I wish there were better instructions with these various hacks. Ones that are geared to light users.

having trouble finding the way with “cd…” in the terminal
just do the following:
1. type “cd ” in a open terminal window (do not forget the blank after “cd”)
2. drag the folder “iPhone Tool” on the same terminal window and release it (this will drop the right path)
3. remove any blanks after the last letter and hit return

ok scratch that last post. i fixed it. I’m using my iPhone with voce.com- the “world’s first premium wireless service” not at&t. much better service imo 24/7 personal assistant, unlimited 411, unlimited everything all for one flat rate of 200 bucks. also free concierge service, reservations etc.
I don’t know if im the first person to be able to use the phone as a cell phone without at&t but if i am that sucks because no1 wil have the answer im looking for. Now as far as the question goes, it will only vibrate as far as notifying me when theres an incoming call. i used funtastic and imported some mp3 songs to use as ring tones but it wont work… it sucks but hey at least i can use my iPhone with all that nsa i mean att bs.
lol if anyone can help please i would be very appreciative. now if im correct- since im able to use this phone with voce it should also be able to work with cricket. hopefully someone can help me out. thanks

Thank you for the wonderful walk through to getting the iPhone unlocked! AT&T wanted to charge me a $500 deposit. Screw them.
ANNNNNYWAYS….. I am unable to use the wifi. It picked up the different connections and I have a router, so it asked for the password, I put the password in. It says wifi is on, enabled and under my router name. However, it still isn’t working. When I pull up Safari and put in an address, it says that it could not activate EDGE and the server was not found.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!

Worked fine for me. Movies and Iphoto took a bit of work to get going. Either the phone is really picky about what type of Mp4 file it got, but I got it working, and so far, it’s been stunning my computer store co-workers.

Just did the softwareupgrade provided by Apple (1.0.1) and can confirm everything works as before. So far I noticed that the Stocks-app now connects/displays much faster. (It took up to 20 seconds before to show me yesterdays losses. Now I can see them in 2 seconds. Safari seems to be also faster, but not that much.

This threat inspired me to buy my Iphone earlier than planned. The hack worked fabulously. The first time didn’t, but after reading the “Readme” in the IPhone Tool folder and renaming the folder to iPhoneTool (w/o space), it unlocked without problems.
iCal synced just fine. I checked “only sync check items” and messed around with the tabs to choose what i want on your phone.

I have read that after you do this crack and then if you let Itunes install iphones newest patch, It will detect the user updated and will delete it and reinstall the original software including the new iphone update to fix the Safari mobile hole.
So I think if you installed any of apples new updates, then you would be able to use your iphone with AT&T.

I think what you are doing wrong is to use the file a.plist. Here is what I did:
1. Use iActivator to perform the jail break, and the other stuff described in their README file.
2. In one of the steps of this program you will generate a plist file which is going to be used for unlocking the phone. Let’s call it xxx.plist, and suppose that it resides in the directory ~/abc.
3. What you want to do is ./tools –activate ~/abc/xxx.plist (not a.plist). Worked for me several times.

Can you put in your local SIM and use it as a phone as well , or only use the sync with iTunes and use it as a PDA.
Hope I can use the phone function to
( checking as buying it is a lot of money if it doesn’t work as a phone 2 )

I used the “Anderson I phone tool file ” It allows all the phone I phone
functions to work…but I can not use it as a phone. What am I missing??

Hi, awesome method. it worked for me with my phones which has firmwares version 1.0 & 1.0.1 respectively. Unfortunately, when i tried to update my 1.0 iphone, i was prompted to restore & update, which i did. After that i got the same error as Gary’s error. Any advice.
iPhone status : unactivated - firmware version 1.0.2

Just got a little ballzy and updated to 1.0.2 I tried the Anderson crack and it still works.
As for those still wondering why your phone is not working. THIS IS NOT A SIM UNLOCK! Telephone, SMS and YOUTube functions do not work with this.

Will this method (or another one possibly) allow me to activate an iPhone that had previously been activated?
I just got an iPhone and have activated it on AT&T, but am not sure I’ll want to switch from Sprint to AT&T. So, instead of taking the phone back and paying a $40 restock fee I might just keep it and use it as an iPod Touch (that has a camera and built-in speaker). (Please don’t reply and say “just get an iPod Touch”, I’ve heard that every other place I’ve asked this question, let’s just discuss activation, please.)

I had to run tool twice before the activation was successfully completed. Other than that, it worked great - many, many thanks.

Now I get something else, after I could, don’t know how, reset the entire iPhone ot its original state.
I activate it and it says it is activated. Then I check the state and get an error
